As the COVID-19 situation has developed we have seen our community pharmacy colleagues begin to struggle under the demand for prescriptions.

Therefore, to support our colleagues please could we ask the following:

• Only request medication you need
• Allow extra time for the pharmacy to process your prescription request (allow a week at least to be safe)
• Place prescription requests responsibly. Do not order medications ‘just in case’ – this can lead pharmacies to run short of stock and create unnecessary waits for other patients

Prescriptions may be ordered in the following ways:

• Online via the link at the top of this page which will require a user name and password to be generated our clinical system - follow the instructions on the link.
• By completing your repeat prescription form which you should hand into reception or put through the letterbox;
• By completing a request form available in the foyer.

Please allow 2 normal working days for the preparation of your repeat prescription. We ask that you order well in advance prior to a Bank Holiday. 

The local pharmacists offer a medication delivery service for housebound patients. When using the online prescription service please let us know if your medication is normally delivered by indicating in the comments box.

Periodically, you may be asked to attend the surgery for a review of your prescription.

Please only order what you need

Once dispensed, medicines cannot be reused even if they are returned to the pharmacist unopened - they have to be destroyed.

Help with NHS costs

In England, around 90% of prescription items are dispensed free. This includes exemptions from charging for those on low incomes, such as:

• those on specific benefits or through the NHS Low Income Scheme
• those who are age exempt
• those with certain medical conditions
• More information is available at NHS Choices

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

• Prescription (per item): £9.35
• 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £108.10
• 3-month PPC: £30.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

Planning ahead

If you are going away on holiday or a business trip, please make sure you have enough medicine to cover the time you’ll be away.   If your usual repeat prescription will be due while you are away, remember:

• to us ask for extra medicine to cover this period
• that we are not open at weekends or bank holidays and that pharmacies are usually  open for limited periods during these times too
• to check your local pharmacy’s opening hours to make sure you can get your  prescription in time
• If you are on holiday in the UK and have forgotten or lost your medication, please call us during normal surgery hours so that we can arrange to send a prescription to a pharmacy at your holiday destination.  You will need to check that the pharmacy of your choice can receive prescriptions electronically (see information on the electronic prescription service, EPS, below) and provide us with the pharmacy name and postcode.

Medicines that can be purchased from a pharmacy or supermarket are known as OTCs.  Following public consultation carried out by NHS England prescribing of these over the counter medicines is changing.
