Children's Blood Tests

We are unable to take a blood samples from babies and some younger children. If your GP would like your baby / child to have a blood test please phone the Children's Hospital at the John Radcliffe to arrange an appointment.  They can be contacted Monday - Friday 08:00 - 17:00 on 01865 231111 / 2 or 234036

If your child needs a fasting blood appointment please discuss with the member of staff when you phone to book it.

Child Health / Baby Clinic

Health Visitors are attached to this practice but their offices are in town.  Their work is concerned with the families of the practice patients, in particular with children up to the age of five years old. They are available Monday - Friday 9am - 5pm on 01865 903247.

Well Baby Clinics are held at the following venues:

  • Monday:  Abingdon Carousel 10:00 - 11:30 (except Bank Holidays)
  • Wednesday: Sutton Courtenay Village Hall 10:00 - 11:00
  • Thursday: Kennington Health Centre 09:00 - 11:00
  • Friday: Malthouse Surgery, Abingdon 12:30 - 14:00

Child Immunisation Programme:  If your child is due his / her immunisations please phone reception to book an appointment with the nurse.

Adults

Talking Space Plus is available for our patients who are aged 18 years + in Abingdon.  The service is provided by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust in Partnership with Principal Medical Limited (PML) and  Oxfordshire Mind.  The talking treatments that we offer are effective, and are recommended by National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines.

  • TalkingSpace Plus offers you the chance to help yourself to cope with life’s ups and downs, feel better and learn your own strategies for keeping well.
  • TalkingSpace Plus is for anyone struggling to cope with anxiety and depression. Take that first step.

The Abingdon Bridge offers advice, guidance and emotional support for stress, relationships, personal safety, drug and alcohol advice and healthy lifestyles.

Weight Management

You can now SELF-REFER to Oxfordshire Weight Management services.  They offer a 12 week educational weight loss programme and 12 weeks of free vouchers for weight loss programmes (Slimming World, WW).

Other Services

Minor Surgery:  Please contact reception for an appointment.

Family Planning:  Consultations during normal surgery times. Coils and implants are by appointment. Please contact reception.

Maternity Medical Services:  Antenatal clinics by appointment with the doctors or midwife – book at reception.  Please let the receptionist know if you are arranging your ante-natal appointment with your GP as it requires a longer appointment.

Social Prescribers

Did you know that you can improve your health through social prescription?

Social prescription will link you to non-medical support and there is good evidence that this can lead to positive health and wellbeing outcomes.

You can be referred to a social prescriber by any of the health care staff at Long Furlong Medical Centre.

The social prescribers will be able to give you more time to focus on what matters to you.

They can connect you to community groups and agencies for practical and emotional support; helping you to access local clubs, activities, education, leisure facilities, recovery projects, voluntary organisations and more.

Becoming connected and engaged in your local community can help you feel supported and can help you feel better.
